WYZE doorbell cameras have become a new and lucrative business for pet owners across the country.
A growing number of owners of dogs are capturing the images of their dogs on their devices and posting them to social media in hopes of gaining a few extra dollars.
The cameras are used to help pets find food, find their owners, and help with grooming.
“The doorbell is a very common feature of pet ownership, especially in rural areas,” said Kristin D. Smith, director of the Pet Industry Research and Analysis Center at the University of California-Berkeley.
“It’s a simple device and it’s very common to have pets use it, even in households where there is little or no access to a telephone.
It’s a very powerful tool and there is nothing to stop them from using it.”
The camera is not limited to dogs and cats, however.
People have also used the devices to record themselves masturbating in public restrooms, or to take pictures of themselves on their phones, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
“People are using the camera to take selfies of themselves, even if they aren’t on their phone,” Smith said.
The devices have become more popular in the past decade.
In 2011, Smith said the number of pets on their owners’ Facebook pages increased from around 40,000 to nearly 200,000.
The popularity of the devices has also led to increased demand for new doorbell models, which often cost upwards of $1,000, she said.
But that is not always the case.
In 2014, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning for “potentially dangerous” products that include a doorbell that emits a low frequency sound when activated.
The warning comes after several incidents of pet owners using the devices and then using the noise to attract the attention of police.
In 2015, the Food and Drugs Administration issued an emergency warning for a “potential dangerous” device that may cause injuries.
Smith said she is unsure if the new rules will have a noticeable impact on the number and size of doorbell manufacturers.
“There are still a lot of people who will buy a new doorbarbell,” she said, “but we are going to see fewer of them, probably because the doorbell companies are getting into it.”
A spokesperson for the United Kingdom’s Department for Education confirmed that there is no change to the regulations.
“All new devices that include video and audio recording will need to comply with the existing guidance,” the spokesperson said.
“However, new devices with cameras are being developed and may be subject to the guidance of the regulator.”
The UK Department of Education has not yet issued a guidance on the devices.
“We have been looking at new rules on the cameras and have been making recommendations to the regulators, so we can make sure that there are clear rules around this and we are taking the right action,” the Department of Information Technology said in a statement.
